The inspiration behind Simien's passion for the project can be traced back to his own experiences working at the Walt Disney theme park, where he would take breaks to ride the Haunted Mansion ride. Speaking at Disney's D23 Expo in September 2022, Simien revealed that his personal connection to the attraction and his love for the Easter eggs hidden in it fueled his desire to create a film that would pay homage to the beloved Disney attraction.
Leto's involvement in the film adds an exciting layer of nostalgia for fans of the Haunted Mansion attraction. He plays Hatbox Ghost, a character known for his disappearing head, which magically reappears inside a hatbox. The Hatbox Ghost was initially introduced to the attraction in 1969 but was subsequently removed, ultimately making a triumphant return in May 2015. Leto's portrayal of this iconic character is sure to captivate audiences and evoke fond memories of the attraction.
