Metroid Prime is a classic video game that was first released in 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube. The game is a first-person action-adventure game that follows the story of Samus Aran, a bounty hunter who explores a distant planet in search of the source of a mysterious signal. The game was highly praised for its innovative gameplay, immersive world building, and engaging story.
Metroid Prime feels like an alternative ripped from the multiverse; a unique snapshot in time when a team of very 1990s American shooters (many of whom worked on the Turok games) came up with their own interpretation of the joystick shooter, under the direction of Japanese master designer Shigeru Miyamoto.
Now, more than two decades later, the game is remastered for modern consoles. Fans has eagerly awaited for the release. The remastered version promises to preserve the essence of the original game while improving its graphics and gameplay.
The story goes that it was Miyamoto, in 2000, who first suggested Retro reinvent the then-dormant Metroid series during a studio visit. Despite his suggestion that the game have a third-person view, Mario's creator is said to have insisted on a first-person design. Since all of the original games took place in 2D, where the hero Samus was clearly visible, this was quite a challenge, and Retro had no choice but to create mechanics and designs from scratch.
The result of this unique collaboration was arguably the greatest GameCube masterpiece ever. Even today, Prime's systems feel unique, like the scope system that allows Samus to display history or switch to heat or x-ray views on the fly, the grappling platforming and shooting mechanics, or the Third-person transform ball, which sends you rocketing up half-pipes in Tony Hawk style, or wall-climbing in massive 3D mazes.
While shooting is an integral part of Prime, a big part of its appeal is that it's actually more of an adventure game, with players spending most of their time solving puzzles in its beautiful alien landscape. Each room is like an art gallery that is also a crime scene, as Samus searches for clues with her scanning scope, hoping to uncover the mystery behind Tallon IV, a twisted hostile planet poisoned by the mysterious element Phazon. carried by an asteroid.
The opening sets the tone, with Samus investigating an abandoned space station covered in the scars of battle and sinister dead alien experiments. The bounty hunter scans for clues with his visor and sneaks through the gaps in morph ball mode, with only a few barely alive creatures to take down with her blaster. After encountering a mysterious enemy and triggering a self-destruct sequence, Samus escapes the ship and descends to the surface of Tallon IV, where he truly begins the detective story.
