Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a single-player action-adventure game set in the Star Wars universe, It is not just more of the same, but more of pretty much everything, with significant advances and improvements across the board. It's a longer game with higher levels of customization, more enemies, more diverse approaches to combat and puzzles, and more storytelling and character development to its engaging cast of characters. While some story and structural options are starting to dry up, Jedi: Survivor is nonetheless a step up in almost every major way.
The game's plot takes place shortly after the events of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. The player assumes the role of a Jedi Padawan named Cal Kestis, With Cal Kestis, there's little of the step back in power that some action game sequels attempt. He's a full-fledged Jedi, with all the Force powers and lightsaber tricks he worked so hard for last time still in his shoes. Playstyle flexibility expands from there, with new saber stances and gear providing options for facing the dangers of the galaxy.
The story is well written and immersive, with plenty of twists and turns along the way. As Cal, players will travel to a variety of different locations, from remote planets to bustling cities, to uncover the mysteries. The game also features a well-developed and interesting cast of characters, including Cal's allies and enemies.
Combat and dueling are excellent and require the patience of a Jedi to master defense. It's awesome to balance the battle encounters in a big game like this so that they're still challenging at every turn, but Cal's new adventure manages to do just that. A wide variety of formidable enemies awaits you, each requiring observation and cunning button work. Some late-game bosses rely on frustrating cheap tricks, but they always result in climactic, poignant encounters. The mobility and navigation challenges, which achieve that feeling of controlling a Force-attuned hero jumping and swinging through seemingly impossible paths. Like the combat, a satisfying upward slope of complexity keeps the course engaging during no small feat in a game this big. Several scattered optional puzzles are also devilishly clever, and I enjoyed them as a diversion from the action.
While Jedi: Survivor includes several unique planets to visit, it grounds the experience in a single frontier world called Koboh, with more than a little Old West inspiration. Large swaths of the game take place in the different corners of this semi-open world planet, filled with rumors to track, bounties to hunt, and secrets to uncover. I like the place, but by the end, I was getting tired of running in circles to the same destination after so many previous visits. Fortunately, whether on Koboh or visiting planets like Coruscant or Jedha, a new fast travel system makes it easy to navigate between meditation points.
Customization is essential throughout the game and its reward systems, from adjusting hairstyles, jackets, and saber colors to character perks and powers. That extends to more ownership over the world, through the ability to upgrade a cantina with a garden, an aquarium, new visitors, and even music tracks. I felt involved in the adventure and the improvements I found along the way.
Throughout its lengthy campaign, Jedi: Survivor takes an initially meandering course to find its plot, but ultimately coalesces into a story about disparate people searching for a safe home. The moment-to-moment character interactions and dialogue help elevate the lack of focus, with radical melodrama in the best traditions of Star Wars fiction. Distinctions between love and attachment, and the dangers of both, often lurk in the background of Star Wars stories. Those themes take center stage this time around, with memorable and rewarding results.
Overall, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is an excellent addition to the Star Wars video game franchise. The game's combination of exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat creates a satisfying and immersive experience that will keep players engaged from start to finish. The game's story is well written and adds to the overall Star Wars canon, while the graphics and sound design are top-notch. If you're a fan of Star Wars or action-adventure games in general, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is definitely worth a look.
